How to Stencil and Paint a Vinyl Floor

Updated: Jul 29, 2019

Through this blog post, I hope I am able to show you that paining your vinyl or linoleum floor is a simple process that not only can be done on a budget, but looks incredible!

So I have to admit, I was super nervous to undertake this project, my husband was leery that I might destroy the floor by painting it. I had seen so many beautiful transformations on Cutting Edge Stencils website, and hoped that this was not case a great pictures, not so quality product. But, thankfully I put my trust in getting it done, and the final product with the Primavera Tile Stencil surpassed my expectations! I also fell in love with the colors of paint from Jolie Paint, and just had to have their products!

I think your are probably wondering, how exactly do I do this thing? Yes!

Well I will tell you....

Step by Step:

1. Vacuum and wash floor thoroughly, I used Enjo bathroom zone to do this. But you are more than welcome to use soap and water.

2. Sand floor with fine grade sand paper, I used P220 sand paper and a DeWalt osculating sander. If you don't have a sander, you can just do it manually sanding in a circular motion across the floor.

3. Vacuum and Wash floor again, let dry

4. Apply painters tape around the edges of your floor on the wall portion, including around the edge of your toilet.

5. Apply Bonding Primer to your floor, I would recommend using Peel Stop Plus, by Zinsser. Start by using an angled brush and apply bonding primer around the edges than use a foam roller to apply the primer to the middle of the floor. Wait 1 hour between coats and apply a total of 2 coats. After applying the second coat, wait 2 hours to paint your base coat color.

6. After the two hours are up, start by painting your base coat color. I used Palace White by Jolie Paint. I applied 4 coats of white paint. Waiting 30 min between coats, as this type of paint dries quickly.

7. Spray back of stencil with spray adhesive, do this outside. I used LePage All Purpose spray adhesive, to prevent the paint from bleeding through the stencil.

8. For the stencil I used the beautiful Primavera tile stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils, lay your stencil in the middle of the floor make sure that it is straight and sticky side down. Use a foam roller and apply your paint to the stencil. I used Verdigris mixed with Palace white from Jolie Paint.

TIP: Less is more! Do not over load your foam roller or paint brush with paint, as this will cause bleeding of paint behind the stencil.

TIP: on hard angles, use extra painters tape to hold your stencil in place while you use your foam roller to roll on paint with the stencil bent around the angle. (please refer to video)

9. Let floor dry and paint set for 8 hours before applying sealer coat.

Tip: I would take the painters tape off now before the clear coat as it caused some of my paint to come off and I had to repaint small parts of the edges after the clear coat was put on.

8. I used Clear Coat by Chalked Rust-Oleum, with this I applied 4 coats to ensure that this high traffic area and sometime wet from massive tub splashing created by my kids, will not destroy the floor.

9. After applying the clear coat sealer layers, let set for 12 hours before use!

10. ENJOY!!! Please refer to video below
