Do it yourself String Art for Beginners
Every summer as I walk through the markets that are displaying their beautiful products, there are always a few beach themed signs that I just wish I could hang in my own home. I have always loved the cottage vibe with blues whites and greys. After a couple of months of string art re-emerging itself from the 70s on to Pinterest, I couldn't help but envision colliding string art and my cottage vibe together.
Here is how I created this piece for my Home:
Step one: Gather your materials
1. Wooden sanded board
2.Wood Stain
3.Paint brush String (I used embroidery floss as well as Hemp Craft String) 4.Hammer Nails (Common nails 7/8”)
5.Tape (I used painters tape)
6.Paper
7.Pencil
8.Ruler
9. Stencil for wording (I have a Cricut maker so I used Vinyl)
10. Paint for the Lettering (Color of your Choice – I used Patina from Folk Art Chalked)
11. Sponge brush
Step two: Prepare the wood surface
Sand and Stain your wooden board, choose your preference for the shade of stain you would like. I personally like darker stains most of the time. Please be sure to take the precautions and warnings on the container seriously. Let the stain dry thoroughly before continuing with this craft.
Step Three: Create your design
As shown by the video I drew a simple sailboat, now I did see a similar idea when I came up with my design which is slightly different than what was displayed on Clevelandcourage blog, I wanted to have more definition on the actual boat, making it look like it was concave.
In the video I made tiny dots about ½ an inch apart to outline where I would insert the nails.
Please refer to the video tutorial for how, though within a couple days of this blog posting I will have a Free SVG, or JPEG for you to download.
Step Four: Begin nailing into the wood
Tape down your paper design to your wooden board Using a hammer, nail the 7/8” nails into the wood where the dotted markings are on your design. After this is completed remove paper and tape.
Step Five: Attach the String
Tie a simple knot with your string to start off then create a frame by going around the structure that needs to be that color. Please refer to the video for this Step
Step 6: Apply your stencil and paint
As mentioned previously, I own a Cricut Maker therefore, I was able to print out my lettering design onto Vinyl. After the Stencil was applied using vinyl transfer tape, I use a sponge brush to prevent bleeding of paint underneath the stencil. The paint I used for the lettering is: Folk Art's Chalked – Patina. I thought it fit well with the beach feel I was going for. After two coats of chalk paint are applied, remove stencil and there you have it, you are done! Not to mention you also have a beautiful piece to hang in your home or give to someone for a gift.
