Beautiful idea for how to make your own Mr and Mrs sign.

Updated: Feb 8, 2019

Something you hang in your own home or used at your wedding should speak to you. With this tutorial, I hope that it will give you some inspiration to make your own custom sign.

I was incredibly excited to start this project for my good friend's wedding. She is getting hitched in September and had showed me what she was thinking about ordering for her wedding flowers.. I wanted to make something special from the heart that she would hopefully use. I thought it might just make her smile to remember her wedding flowers added to the usual Mr and Mrs sign. After Making this for her, I kinda want one for myself. Anyway here is a step by step guide to completing the board, I did not outline steps for the paining itself as it would have been a very lengthy video.

Where do you start?

Supplies needed:

1. Wooden board
2. Wood stain - I personally like the darker stains but you can really choose whatever shade you like best.
3. Chalk paint - for the white wash look in the background
4. Sandpaper - to distress the white to your liking.
5. Acrylic paints and paintbrushes
6. Reference picture
7. Stencil or if you do not have one feel free to paint the lettering by hand.
8. Sponges or sponge brushes - applying paint to the stencil

Lets get started:

First thing is first, stain your wooden board, the size I used for this crafts was a 28X36 inch, You can purchase this at any Lumber store, I got this board at Rona, as well as the stain I used.

Make sure you wear gloves when staining and perform this action in a well ventilated space. Basically just adhere to the safety directions on the container.

After staining with two coats, make sure it is fully dry and apply the white chalk paint to the middle.

When the paint is dry sand to distress to your liking. Wipe away the access powder with a damp cloth, let dry.

Paint your own masterpiece, and just follow your heart!

Before painting your picture it is a good idea to draw with pencil or pencil crayon and outline an idea of your image you wish to create. After you set yourself up with a palette of paints, water glass, and some paper towel, put brush to paint and create!

As seen in the video, I have a Circut Maker, which cut out the vinyl stencil for me. With this I used Vinyl transfer tape to place the Mr and Mrs correctly on my painted board.

When painting with stencils the less paint used is always better. You are much more successful if you do two coats than one. It will end up bleeding under the stencil if you use too much or use a brush to apply the paint. The best option to use is sponges made for crafting, they are much better for preventing the paint to bleed.

I used acrylic paint for the stencil in the video, but you could also use chalk paint if you wanted to.

Lastly, I didn't share in the video is the option to seal it with a clear coat, to make the painting more permanent.
